- Drive on the right. Road signs are in Latin and Cyrillic.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on open roads, 100–120 km/h on highways.
- Headlights must be on at all times, even during the day.
- Seatbelts are mandatory. Phone use only hands-free.
- Mountain roads can be narrow and winding — expect sharp curves, tunnels, and occasional livestock.
- Winter driving: snow chains or winter tires may be required in some areas from November to April.
- Tolls are rare but may apply at certain tunnels or border crossings.
- Fuel stations are widespread on major roads. Most accept cards and euros. In remote areas, keep your tank at least half full.
- Parking in Kotor, Budva, and Podgorica can be limited in peak season. Use paid zones, hotel lots, or underground garages.
- EU, UK, USA, and Canadian drivers can use their home license. Other nationalities may need an International Driving Permit.
- Always carry your passport, license, insurance, and rental documents.

❔︎ What documents do I need to rent a car ⮷
Nothing complicated — just bring your valid driving license and passport. That’s all you’ll normally need to pick up your car and get on the road.
❔︎ Do I need an International Driving Permit ⮷
Usually, no. Your regular national driving license is enough for driving in Montenegro. If your license isn’t written in the Latin alphabet, though, it’s a good idea to have an International Driving Permit with you as well.
❔︎ Is it safe to drive in Montenegro ⮷
Yeah, for sure. Driving around Montenegro is pretty safe, and the roads are mostly in good shape.
The only spots we’d suggest taking it easy are the mountain roads. They can get a bit narrow and twisty, but honestly, nothing to stress about — just take your time, soak in the views, and enjoy the ride.
❔︎ What kind of car should I rent ⮷
It really depends on your trip.
If you’re planning to spend most of your time around Kotor, Budva, Tivat, or other coastal towns, a small or compact car is usually perfect. It’s easy to drive and, more importantly in summer, much easier to park.
If you’re traveling with family, have plenty of luggage, or want to explore the mountains, you may feel more comfortable in a larger car or SUV.

It depends a little on the car you choose, but don’t worry — you’ll be able to see what’s included before you book.
We like to keep things simple and upfront, so you know exactly what you're paying for before your trip even starts.

No. We don’t like surprises when it comes to money either.
You'll see the rental price and any extras you pick before you confirm your booking. And if there's an extra charge for something like a special delivery, a one-way rental, or crossing a border, we'll always let you know upfront.

We can bring the car to you pretty much anywhere in Montenegro — Tivat, Kotor, Budva, Podgorica, Herceg Novi, and plenty of other spots. Just tell us where you're staying or how you're arriving, and we'll sort out a pickup.

Of course. We can bring your car to your hotel, apartment, or the airport, so you don’t have to spend the beginning of your holiday looking for a rental office.

❔︎ Can you deliver a car to an airport outside Montenegro ⮷
We can not deliver a car to an airport outside Montenegro.
In many cases, unfortunately no. We're not able to arrange delivery to airports in neighboring countries like Tirana, Sarajevo, or Belgrade.
Because international deliveries need a lot more planning, it's usually not something we can do. But feel free to ask us in advance — we'll check what's possible and let you know if there are any options.
❔︎ Can I pick up the car in one city and return it in another ⮷
Yes, that’s possible.
For example, you can pick up the car in Tivat and drop it off somewhere else in Montenegro. Just let us know your route when you book, and we'll help you figure out the easiest option.
Depending on the pickup and return locations, there may be a small additional fee — we’ll always tell you about it in advance.
❔︎ Can I take the rental car to another country ⮷
Usually, no. If Montenegro is just one part of your Balkan road trip, it's better to let us know before you leave — but unfortunately, we can't always make it work.
We won't be able to check that your route is allowed or sort out documents, restrictions, and extra costs for you. It's much easier to plan everything beforehand, but in this case, we can't guarantee it.

Yes. You can pay by cash or card — whichever is easier for you.
❔︎ Are there toll roads in Montenegro ⮷
There aren’t many tolls, so you generally don’t need to think about them too much.
There are charges on a few specific routes, including the Sozina Tunnel and some motorway sections. If your journey takes you through one of them, you can simply pay the toll along the way.
❔︎ Is parking difficult in Montenegro ⮷
Most of the time, no. But during the summer, places like Kotor and Budva can get quite busy.
Paid parking and public garages are usually the easiest option in the popular coastal towns. If you’re staying right in the old town or close to the waterfront, it’s also worth asking your hotel or apartment whether they have parking.
And yes — this is one of the reasons we often recommend a smaller car for a coastal holiday.
❔︎ What car is best for exploring the coast ⮷
For most coastal trips, we’d go with a compact car.
The roads between towns are fine for regular cars, and once you arrive in places like Kotor or Budva, you’ll be very happy to have something small when it’s time to find a parking space.
Unless you need lots of room for people or luggage, there’s really no need to rent something huge.
❔︎ Do I need an SUV in Montenegro ⮷
For a normal Montenegro holiday, probably not.
A regular car will comfortably take you to most of the places visitors want to see. An SUV can be nice if you’re traveling with a bigger family, carrying lots of luggage, or planning to spend more time exploring mountain areas.
